Traditional South Asian Spice Mix
Garam masala spice mix is a blend of ground spices originating from South Asia. It is common in Indian, Pakistani, Nepalese, and Bangladeshi cuisines. It is used alone or with other seasonings. Garam Masala best uses whole spices dry roasted in a hot pan until fragrant. The spices are then put through a spice grinder and then combined. However, if you don’t have whole spices and don’t want to go to the expense of purchasing more, using the store-bought ground spices you may already have in your cupboard is acceptable. The spice mix will keep for several months if kept in a container with a tight-fitting lid, preferably out of direct sunlight.

- 1 tbsp cumin, ground
- 1½ tsp coriander, ground
- 1½ tsp cardamom, ground
- 1½ tsp pepper, black, ground
- 1 tsp cinnamon, ground
- ½ tsp clove, ground
- ½ nutmeg, ground
